FTA Forum retiree news 2002 - 2003

If you are trying to get in touch with a retiree or wishto report
retiree news, please contact Joyce through our FTA office.

Please put the date Wednesday, June 2 on your calendar and plan to come to the retirement celebration and end of the year party at the Coral House.

All we ask is that you let me know that you are coming so we can give numbers to the FTA. It will be great to have a real reunion.

Michael and Betsy Brody became grandparents to a 7 lb. 2 oz. girl, 4/22 and went off to California to meet her for a week of smiles! They had a great trip to New Zealand and Australia. It was a wonderful small compatible group of 3 couples + a guide in N.Z. and 6 couples in Australia. Betsy heard from someone at the Delegates Assembly that Vicki Fuller was also on a trip to N.Z. and Australia at about the same time as we. Betsy reports that the "day after we returned I had a call from Bob Saputo who wanted to compare notes about the trip which he & Linnea had taken some years ago. Then he told me that as of 4/20/04 his address will be OCALA FL 34482 ." Eric Styles is moving to the area too! Lil Guttman has a home in Tampa where we visited her in early April during her spring vacation. She’ll be there full time after June. I think we’ll have a FTA reunion in North Florida this winter.

I heard from Doris McLellan that she winters in Ft. Meyers Beach Florida across the street from the Gulf. She and her husband return to L.I. in April as he still teaches summer and fall classes at Nassau Community College. Hope Carroll wrote that she became engaged in December and will be married this summer and move from Freeport to Oceanside. She will be renting her house in FPT and would welcome offers so if you know someone interested please call her (516/379-2669). Best Wishes to Hope! She has been working 2 1/2 days a week with pre-K children through a private agency delivering speech services; had a winter vacation cross-country skiing in Canada and plans a cruise to Bermuda this spring.

In March I heard from Anna Jean Cacciatore who winters in Florida. She has great grandchildren and one more on the way and reports that she sees Marj Greenberg Zamichow occasionally.

Carmen Sunden wrote that she, Ruth Wayne and Claire Zwiebel had a reunion at the Bar Mitzvah of Claire’s grandson. It was in Hollywood, Florida. Carmen reported that Claire now lives in St. Croix, the Virgin Islands and Ruth in Stewart, FL. And Roberta Heiman sent her new FL address in Bradenton.

Michael and I visited with Cliff Froelich and his wife Marsha at their new home in Smithtown. It is lovely and they are well. They had visited with Dick Yanelli and his wife at their vacation home in Hilton Head earlier in the fall and were questioning us about our home in Florida for future reference. Cliff reports that Dick is well.

Thelma ‘Terri’ Stein and husband, Stan, moved from “the hubbub of southeast Florida to the tranquility of Ocala.” She worked for the last 13 years at a Hebrew day school in Boca Raton and is now more or less fully retired....and we will be neighbors! Michael and I met twice with Terri and Stan when we were at our new Florida home during the holiday vacation. We never knew each other in Freeport but thanks to this newsletter I think we will be friends!

Tom Gorman has also moved. His new adddress is in Petaluma, CA. He and wife, Sophia, drove cross country in September to a home 45 miles north of San Francisco in Sonoma County. After 45 years in Freeport this is quite a change for them! Magdelena Law wrote that she expects to become a great grandmother in early February! She completed a 6 week training course to be a Hospice volunteer - inspired to do this after having been on the receiving end for 2 years as her husband, Ronald, was dying.

Bertha Martin wrote that she has been very busy since her retirement in ‘97 with traveling and living part of the year in Lakeland FL and part here on Long Island where she does volunteer work for the homeless at her church.

I have no details as to the cause but am very sad to report that McArthur McKinnon, who just retired last June, died on December 26, 2003. I heard about this sad news from Bonita Sanabria who spoke to his wife Dee and gave me their new address to share with you. [They moved during the summer to 24 Brayton Court, Selden, NY 11720]. Services were held in Selden the week after Christmas.

We welcome to membership Gerri Borzello who retired in 6/03 and writes of her wonder filled year:... married in July, honeymooned in Sicily, home to regroup and pack for Germany, Austria & Switzerland. In December they were off on a cruise to the Southern Caribbean and now she is busy organizing photos and loving retirement!

Ina Rubin , whom I see periodically at concerts at Tilles Center, is fine. Ina told me that Roberta Heiman has moved to Florida but I don’t have an address for her. Michael and I are off to New Zealand and Australia 2/26-3/24 after which we are expecting our first grandchild in late April or early May.

I recently saw Ira Schlidkraut, who is looking well after a bad health year and 2 surgeries. I learned that he is teaching part time at a local yeshiva and happily advising the newspaper there.

Gwen White reports that she and Carl are expecting their first grandchildren (twins) in December!

Phil and Peggy Galati report that they have given up boating and moved to a gated community near their last home in Engelwood, FL. They enjoy volunteer work, the gym and golf and send good wishes to all the Freeport retirees.

Carolyn Marshall wrote that she and husband Tom enjoyed a trip to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji in March. The scenery in NZ was especially beautiful and the people were friendly.

I learned at the 6/4/03 Retirement reception that several people decided to retire after the district office gave me the names printed in the last bulletin. And so the FTA honored, in addition to those listed in the May-June issue, also Robert Hirschfield of Atkinson, Suzanne Beauchamp of New Visions, McArthur McKinnon and Jean Karasek of Dodd. It was a lovely reception in the main ‘ballroom’ at the Coral House and there were many retirees who came too. Anna Cacciatore, Paul Johnson, Clyde Putallaz, Mireille Taub, Dot McGuire, Barbara Sigal, Sarita Keyser, Ed Martin, Jack Bart, Rita Carter, and Marcia Weinstein all signed in. Hope Carrell was also there and I suspect there were others who didn’t sign in. Unfortunately I got there a bit late and didn’t get to talk to them all. Everyone looks amazingly well!

I also learned that Eric Seifried had died just that week. His wake was in progress as we honored our newest retirees. In addition, I learned from Bonita Sanabria that Jake Tingman died in mid May in South Carolina where he had retired. I would much rather have good news to report. Our sympathies go to the families of these former Freeport people.

I heard from Ibi Grun in Israel: “Do not believe EVERYTHING you read. Life is hard here for the poorest people, it is true, (isnt it everywhere?) The middle class is slowly disappearing (but my family here is O.K., thank God)”. I have been on holiday in my native Argentina, sent by my children. I am enjoying friends, go to concerts, take drama lessons, visit museums. The cultural life here is really fantastic and I am enjoying it tremendously. Freeport schools are still in my heart.”

Richard Restivo told me that our participation in the drive for VOTE COPE money was ultimately twice that of my last report - 65 people gave and over $1050 was contributed by retirees. Hopefully that will benefit active teachers as well as ourselves in the near future.

It is now time to send in these contributions again. VOTE COPE needs money to fight the very flawed Medicare Prescription Drug bill which recently passed and will not be helpful to us at all.
