WHO ARE WE? GETTING TO KNOW THE FTA
EXECUTIVE BOARD
The Freeport
Teachers Association Exec Bd members were asked
about their professional backgrounds and what
led them to becoming active union members. We
mirrored A. Bartlett’ Giamatti’s (President
of Yale) beliefs: “Teachers believe they
have a gift for giving; it drives them with the
same irrepressible drive that drives others to
create a work of art or a market or a building.” |

in 1998 and 2nd Vice President in 2001. In addition,

I can do!” |

Denise
Lloyd 2nd Vice President
“Thirteen years
ago, I agreed to become involved in the FTA as
a delegate. The educational climate, at the time,
seemed to sway from our main objective: the education
of our students and the frontline people held
responsible for educating them, our teachers.
Both students and teachers were at the mercy of
pranksters. It has been a long journey, but I
believe we have our priorities in order. As a
union leader, I have an important role in helping
to create a bridge of respect, understanding and
communication between the faculty and administration
and to facilitate movement towards our common
goal - the educational success of all our students.”
Denise C. Lloyd received her BA with Honors in
Psychology from Richmond College, her MS in Guidance
and Advanced Certificate in Educational Supervision
and Administration from Brooklyn College, and
post-masters education in Psychology from the
New School for Social Research. Denise is presently
in a doctorial program at St. John’s University
for Education & Supervision. Denise has 19
years of educational expertise, sixteen years
at Dodd Middle School. Additionally, she presently
serves Freeport children as the 21st Century Site
Supervisor at Dodd Middle School. Some of her
roles in Freeport Schools included: union rep,
FTA newsletter editor, NYSUT and AFT representative,
building coordinator, district honors committee
member, site-based team trainer/member, Dodd Respect
Campaign organizer, district guidance plan member,
school-to-career board member, Math, Science &
Technology Partnership (MSTP) member, guidance
intern supervision, as well as CDOS trainer.

recieved my BA in English. I started teaching
at FHS in 1977 and earned a MS in computers from
CW Post along with 30 graduate credits in reading,
teaching all levels of English from 9-12, remedial
to honors and inclusion. I became involved as
delegate in FTA on and off over the years and
most recently at the urging of Bob Wolchok, Sara
Menikoff and Lillian Guttman. past year was a
very productive year as BC with Bob Wolchok working
as well as with Dr. Mike Courtney at the high
school.
As
2nd VP, I hope to open the lines of communication
between buildings so we can function as one union
with strength, unity, and power. I have always
loved solving problems and am looking forward
to a challenging year!

Arlene

the Freeport Schools for the past 17 years, at 2nd
and 3rd Grades, then as Math Specialist at Archer
and now at Atkinson as the Math teacher on Special
Assignment. I decided to become a delegate in 1994

an educated unionist. I have also served as building

involved with FTA. I took a three year leave when
both of my children were born have returned to active
duty this year as the new treasurer. I am looking
