FTA Building Coordinators
WHO ARE WE? GETTING TO KNOW THE FTA EXECUTIVE BOARD
The Freeport Teachers Association Exec Bd members were asked about their professional backgrounds and what led them to becoming active union members. We mirrored A. Bartlett’ Giamatti’s (President of Yale) beliefs: “Teachers believe they have a gift for giving; it drives them with the same irrepressible drive that drives others to create a work of art or a market or a building.”

Robert Wolchok FHS
I received my BA in Secondary Ed from St. John’s University, June 1969 . with a minor in History. I completed my MS in Secondary Education, also at St. John’s in 1974. Before teaching in Freeport. I taught 9th 11th and 12th Grade Social Studies in Roosevelt for 19 years.) I was active in the Roosevelt Teacher's Association as a Building Delegate for at least ten years, served on a negotiation team once and before leaving had served a term as the 1st VP of the teacher's union. In 1988, I was hired Freeport in Sept, 1988 teaching taught 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th grade social studies up through the present.

After regaining my tenure in Freeport I became active once again in union activities serving as a building delegate for several years before becoming a co-building coordinator working with Sara Menicoff, Marion Bencivenga and this year with Andrea Kane I see my role as a union leader as providing several services to the members. All teachers need someone to whom they can vent. The FTA needs someone to serve as a cheerleader when times are difficult and someone to organize a celebration in good times. In addition they need someone with experience to guide and advise them. In addition, they need someone who can speak up for them when necessary, and, finally, someone who can open lines of communication between faculty members and administrators so we all can be more effective teachers. I am proud to try to be able to be that someone.

Saundra Wilson Archer
I have a BA from Hunter in Education and an MS in Education from Bank Street. In addition, I have an Administrator’s Certificate (Elementary Ed). I have been at Archer for the past 20 years, currently teaching 2nd Grade. I have been involved with the FTA on and off for over 12 years, serving first as an FTA delegate and then, when Arlene Easter transferred to Atkinson, I was elected Building Coordinator. I view my role as BC primarily to disseminate information that affect us as teachers and, equally important, as a liaison between faculty and principal helping to make sure that our school runs smoothly.

Larry Steimer Columbus
I have been with the Freeport School district for seven years. I am in my third year as the Building Coordinator at Columbus Avenue. I became involved with the union because I enjoy working with my colleagues in this capacity in addition to teaching. I have a Master's in school district administration from the College of New Rochelle.

Jim Stalzer Bayview
I hold a BM, MM in French Horn Performancethe Manhattan School of Music. My teaching credits are from C.W. Post. This is my 21st year as a music educator, the last 19 being spent here in Freeport( 14 at Dodd and the past 5 at Bayview) Prior to that I worked in Lawrence Junior High for 2 years. And, before that, I freelanced as a French hornist in NYC. I became involved with the FTAwhen I realized that I would probably retire from Freeport and that my retirement was based on the contracts we negotiated and the contracts we negotiate are based on how strong our union is and our union is only as strong as all our members pulling their weight. It was time for me to do my fair share. As Building Coordinator, I hope to be able to stand up for our contract when necessary but even more importantly I hope to solve problems in the building before they get out of hand. I would like our younger members to see what union participation means and step up to the plate when we retire.

Aneesah Abdus-Shakur New Visions
I received a BA from Molloy College in a joint degree program for International Peace an Justice as well as Education K-6, followed by my MS (Queens College) in TOESL. This is my 14th year with the Freeport school district. I became involved with the FTA because teachers I respected were also active in the Union. I just followed their example to support teachers by being a delegate (1 year) and the past 5 years as BC. I view my role as supporting the FTA members in my building so we can be effective in our role as educators. It means working with the faculty and administrators to promote a relationship which allows teachers to have a voice in the procedures of the school as well as in how we can best teach our students. This also means sometimes helping teachers to communicate their ideas and concerns to administration.

Mary Kelly Giblyn
I earned a BS in Elementary Ed (Science concentration from St. Bonaventure University, following up with an MA in Elementary Education from Hofstra. This is my 14th year in Freeport, first starting as a Permanent Sub at Giblyn, and then teaching 1st and 3rd grades before becoming a Math Specialist, 4 years ago. I became active in the FTA because, Joyce Fischer both inspired me and encouraged me to take a leadership role since the “future of the FTA” is in the hands of the more recently tenured teachers. In addition to serving as a Building Delegate for several years, I have also worked on FTA and District wide committees, representing my colleagues. I see my role as BC as keeping my building members informed about FTA issues and helping the teachers in my building to have the best possible professional career in Freeport. It all adds up to good educational sense!
