Ray Pfeifer , NYSUT Labor Relations Specialist spoke to the FTA Delegate Assembly.

Pfeifer, in speaking about the Teachers’ Bill of Rights for Health and Safety pointed out that we have :

  • The right to a workplace free of recognized health and safety hazards
  • The right to obtain safety and health information from your employer
  • The right to establish a union health and safety committee
  • The right to bring outside experts into the workplace to conduct inspections and evaluations
  • The right to be free from discrimination for exercising your health and safety rights
  • The right to training about the chemicals with which you work

Joyce, Fischer, the FTA Union Representative, commented that Health and Safety Issues start in the classroom and are everyone’s concern. Each teacher should know who is their health and safety building representative. If there are classroom or building concerns, their building delegate should be informed so that the steps may be taken to correct the situation their school’s health and safety committees.
